PURPOSE: A motion detecting MIDI playing apparatus and method are provided to perform MIDI playing through a rhythmic movement of the human body not a key instrument. CONSTITUTION: A MIDI playing apparatus includes a sensing/transmitting portion(100) for sensing and transmitting a motion of a user, and a MIDI/control message converting portion(110). The MIDI/control message converting portion receives the signal from the sensing/transmitting portion and converts the signal into MIDI data and control message data. The MIDI/control message converting portion transmits the MIDI data to a sampler(120) and a sound source module(140), and sends the control message to the first and second effect portion(130,150). The MIDI playing apparatus further includes a mixer, an amplifier and a speaker.
