PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of increasing lateral rigidity of a fiberglass composite plate spring to be used in a suspension system. SOLUTION: Two carbon fiber inserts 50 are introduced into both side ranges in the length direction of the fiberglass composite springs 10 and 12 to increase lateral rigidity. Quantity of the carbon fiber insert 50 is, preferably, 10-20 vol.% of total volume of the spring, and it is a function of distortion characteristics required inside the suspension system. With the composite plate springs 10 and 12, advantages related to weight of the fiberglass springs can be secured compared to conventional steel plate springs, and lateral rigidity to improve steering controllability, and improve suspension and fuel tank packaging efficiency. The new composite spring can be formed by laminating prepreg tapes containing fiberglass, carbon fibers, and resin, or in 3-D weaving processes. |
