Use of a friction welding process for producing welding joints between metal strips, plates, billets and/or profiles, in which at least one of the parts to be joined is made from a foamed metal, is new. The pressure and temperature in the seam is adjusted during welding so that the foamed metal does not foam. Preferred Features: One of the parts to be joined consists of two covering layers with a foamed intermediate layer. The parts to be joined may be made from different metals or alloys.
