PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylindrical grinder capable of speedily making a pressurizing element contact with and separate from a work with a long moving distance there between. SOLUTION: This cylindrical grinder is furnished with a work holding device 3 to hold and rotate the lengthy round rod type work 3, a grinding wheel rotating driving motor 17 to rotate a grinding wheel 4 and a grinding wheel forwarding and retreating actuator 19 to change a center distance between the grinding wheel 4 and the work 2. It is furnished with the pressurizing element 21 touched on an outer peripheral surface of the work 2 in a state free to displace in the diametrical direction of the work 2 and a pressurizing means to carry out pressurizing motion to pressurize the element 21 on the side of the work 2 and separating motion to release and separate it from the work 2. The pressurizing means is structured to relatively increase moving speed of the pressurizing element 21 at the time when a distance between the pressurizing element 21 and the work 2 is relatively large at least in the pressurizing motion out of the pressurizing motion and the separating motion.
