PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nonionic surfactant excellent in solubility in water and good in foaming breaking properties and to provide a method for producing the nonionic surfactant. SOLUTION: This 1,2-diol alkylene oxide adduct comprises a mixture of compounds represented by general formula (1) [R1 is a 1-30C aliphatic and/or an alicyclic hydrocarbon group which may contain oxygen atom; AO is one or more species of 2-8C alkylene oxides; and m and n are each a positive number of 0-20 so as to provide 1<=m+n<=35] and satisfying general formula (2) 0<[Ln(X/0.1644)]/[100-Y]<=0.044 (2) [Y the ratio (mol%) of the compounds in which m is 0; X is the sum of the average value of m and the average value of n].
