A method has dish-baskets and cutlery-baskets or similar dish-receptacles placed in a washing area sealed by a dish-washer door. The dishes (6) to be washed, are scanned before placement in the dish-holder (2), by an optical scanner (10) connected to the program control (7) for ascertaining the number of dishes and their type, and the amount of residual food elements to be washed and removed.
