PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an evaporator 1a which is small in size and has high performance. SOLUTION: One half part in the width direction of a core part 5a is constituted of a first portion 20, formed by putting a plurality of first elements having first and second linear passages 34 and 35 provided inside and fins on each other, while the other half part in the width direction is constituted likewise of a second portion 21 formed by putting a plurality of second elements having U-shaped passages 46, 46 provided inside and fins on each other. A refrigerant, sent into one half part in the thickness direction of the first portion 20 located on the inlet tank part 47 side, turns back in the direction which is opposite to the length direction of each first linear passage 34, in this one half parting the thickness direction, while the refrigerant sent into the other half part in the thickness direction of the first portion 20 located on the outlet tank part 52 side turns back in a direction opposite to the length direction of each second linear passage 35, in the other half part in the thickness direction, and the number of times of turning back of the former refrigerant is made larger than that of the latter.
