Preparation of a 3-21C aldehyde (I) by hydroformylation of the corresponding olefin (II) with a rhodium catalyst (III) comprises: (1) separation of the discharge (A) into a gas and a liquid phase (B); (2) (B) is separated into a top fraction of unreacted (II) and (I) and a sump fraction (C) comprising (III); and (3) (C) is cooled below the temperature of (A) and treated with gas containing carbon monoxide (CO).
