PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of economically manufacturing an alumina porous body containingβ-alumina which has good heat resistance, thermal shock resistance and corrosion resistance. SOLUTION: This is the method of manufacturing an alumina porous body comprising a process of forming a mixture of alumina powder and strontium sulfate powder or a mixture of alumina powder, strontium sulfate powder and barium sulfate powder, a process of heating and precipitatingβ-alumina phasis, a process of removing strontium sulfate or strontium sulfate and barium sulfate and heating to obtain a calcined body and a process of cooling and then washing the calcined body by leaching acid soluble or water soluble materials.
