PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a satisfactory separation function and a conveying function for paper of many kinds while simplifying a structure by reducing the number of component items in the case of a paper separation device for separating sheets of paper one by one to send out only one sheet to a conveying path. SOLUTION: A paper separation pad 62 comprises a first plate 62A made of a material suited to promote loosening performance for recording paper P and a second plate 62B made of a material suited to promote conveying ability for the recording paper P. The separation pad 62 is held by a pad holding member 63 movable in a horizontal direction normal to the conveying direction of the recording paper P. By moving the holding member 63, switching takes place between a separation performance priority state relative to the recording paper P and a conveying ability priority state relative to the recording paper.
