PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a line printer in which printing speed is increased furthermore while satisfying reduction of power consumption. SOLUTION: A print data area bounded by a white line is detected in units of block (S2), and if the number of dots per line in the print data area exceeds a maximum printable number of dots at a head drive section, a number for dividing a line head for each area in the main scanning direction before outputting print data is calculated (S3). A maximum dividing number n in the print data area is detected (S4) and sheet carrying speeds V1-V4 are set in inverse proportion to the maximum dividing number n (S5 to S12). At the time of printing in a print data area of one unit block, printing is executed under conditions that the line head is driven while being divided by the maximum dividing number n and a sheet is carried by set sheet carrying speeds V1-V4 (S13). Since reduction of power consumption can be satisfied and the sheet carrying speed can be increased more in a print data area having a smaller number of dots, printing speed can be increased furthermore.
