A carousel of tools 40 is sealed within a well (10, figure 1). Tools 65 are selectively and automatically deployed from the carousel 63 to perform operations in the well. A tool may serve to measure temperature, pressure or well fluid composition or to set a plug. The operation may be performed at a predetermined depth. Also disclosed is a method (figure 4) of deploying a tool in which fluid flow in the well is halted whilst a tool descends and then flow is resumed to retrieve the tool. A further invention comprises injecting sensors (124, figure 8) into the well fluid and retrieving data. The sensors may be introduced via chemical injection ports in the well. Also disclosed is a robot (150, figure 10) sealed in a well to perform operations. The robot may be a tractor and may be independent or tethered to control electronics. Should the robot become trapped, it may collapse and release a buoyant indicator (204, figure 12). |
