PURPOSE: Provided is novel whitening composition which contains chromone of the formula(1) as an active ingredient. The chromone can be mass-produced and inhibits tyrosinase activity effectively, therefore it can be useful as an active ingredient of a whitening composition. CONSTITUTION: The whitening composition contains chromone of the formula(1), wherein R1 is hydrogen, or lower alkyl group selected from the group consisting of -CH3, -CH2CH3, -CH2CH2CH3, -CH(CH3)2, -CH2CH2CH2CH2CH3, -CH(CH3)CH2CH3, and -CH2CH(CH3)2; R2 is -CH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CH2CH2CH2-, CH2CH(C6H5)- or CHR4-(where, R4 IS -CH3, -CH2CH3 OR -CH2C6H5-); and R3 is -CH3, -CH2CH3,-CH2CH2CH3 or -CH(CH3)2.
