PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an engine capable of preventing worsening of exhaust gas by activating catalyst because the combustion due to compression self-ignition is done early. SOLUTION: This controller for the engine provided with the catalyst for burning air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber due to compression self- ignition and purifying exhaust gas components in the combustion chamber is provided with a means for controlling the catalyst, which is provided with a means for judging an activation condition of the catalyst and a means for activating the catalyst based on the results of the judgement of the means for judging the activation condition of the catalyst.
