The present invention is directed to a system and method of assigning a network address to a client on a broadcast-based network. An address request in a broadcast-based network protocol is interpreted by a program residing on a network server that uses an address-based network protocol and transmits an address to the network client using a broadcast-based network protocol. This system and method, in one embodiment, provides a series of instructions on a server using an address-based network protocol, such as RARP, for interpreting instructions using a broadcast-based network protocol, such as DHCP and BOOTP, for providing an IP address to a client on a broadcast-based network, such as an Ethernet network, for example. Also provided for by the present invention is a system for handling requests from devices using multiple network protocols.
