An approach for assisting a consumer with making purchases within a retail store is disclose. A consumer database stores purchase history information of the consumer. A host computer communicates with the consumer database to retrieve purchase history information form the consumer database. The host computer identifies gaps in the purchase history information and generates a shopping list based upon the identified gaps. The shopping list includes the items that are recommended for purchase. The host computer transmits the shopping list to the consumer in one of two ways : via email or a kiosk that is located in the retail store. A recipe database communicates with the host computer and stores recipe data, which comprises recipe identification information and ingredient information. The host computer compares the shopping list with the recipe data and selectively generates recommended recipe information. The host computer inserts the recommended recipe information into the shopping list. The shopping list is provided to a store computer, which stores the shopping list in the store database. The consumer is notified by the store computer on a real-time basis of any items the consumer has forgotten from the shopping list during a purchase transaction. |
