Silica-group composite oxide fiber and process for the production thereof

A silica-group composite oxide fiber comprising: (a) a first oxide phase mainly made of a silica component; and, provided thereon (b) a second phase containing at least one oxide of a metal other than silicon wherein the concentration of said at least one oxide in the second phase increases towards the surface of the fiber.
