PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonizing furnace of counter-current direct firing system free from the deterioration of quality and the lowering of the yield of a product due to vigorous burning stimulation. SOLUTION: The carbonizing furnace of counter-current direct firing system comprises a rotary furnace, a charging hood at one end, of the rotary furnace and an exhaust hood at the other end. The charging hood is provided with a charging device for a material to be carbonized and an exhausting port of carbonization gas. The exhaust hood is provided with a supplementary burner and a discharging port of a product. In the furnace, a shielding member is placed on the side of the exhaust hood of the carbonizing furnace in such a state that flame of a burner and burning air do not come in contact directly with the product.
