The invention concerns a method and container (1) for promoting the aerobic composting of solid composting organic material without the necessity of agitating such material. This is achieved by the positioning of three-dimensional, compost enhancing and/or accelerating structures (5) formed from substantially rigid biodegradable material at intervals along the height dimension of a mass of compostable material, thereby separating the compostable material into discrete layers (7) and creating aeratable spaces between the layers.
