The device works by counting impulses from the Geiger tube, with the adjustable high voltage, which anables measurements of the tube characteristics. The device includes a digital data-processing subsystem with a microcontroler that takes over a number of functions that would otherwise be performed by separate electronic circuits, which reduces the overall circuit complexity related to the device features, lowering the relative price as well. In addition, considering the user interface, there are no potentiometers or similar components that would deteriorate mechanically over time, thus reducing the system reliability. Hence the system is generally modular, reliable, and easily maintained. Finally, the current signal the pickoff using a current-mirror enables the detection of the tube breakdown, making the device safe even in case of strong radiation, since instead of freezing, it indicates by audio and video alert, that the tube is malfunctioning. |
