PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compression method and a decompression method for image data where deterioration in the image quality by compression and decompression can be suppressed and to provide a compression method and a decompression method for image data at a high compression rate. SOLUTION: The image data compression method is includes a step (S02), where image elements included in a digital image read from paper are extracted, steps (S03-S05) where a compression method is employed, depending on a kind of the image elements compresses the data of respective extracted image elements (51-53), and a step, where respective compressed image element data (54-56) are stored.
