Road marking removal method

The method for removing road markings such as white lines etc. from a road surface includes mounting a milling head 11 on the front of a vehicle so that the milling head rotates about a substantially horizontal axis which extends transversely to the direction of travel of the vehicle. An air flow is generated over the milling head such that debris generated by the cutting action is entrained in the air flow and passes to a storage chamber on the vehicle. The milling head is preferably driven by a motor 16 that is positioned above the milling head and contained in the air flow. The milling head also preferably carries a number of replaceable cutters 13 with the direction of the milling head being such that the cutters are moving forwards relative to the vehicle and the road surface as they hit the road surface so that debris generated by the cutting action is projected forwards of the vehicle. A flexible rubber skirt 14 is preferably located in front of the milling head that prevents forward movement of debris and ensures that it is entrained in the air flow. The milling head is also preferably mounted on a hollow axle to which water is supplied which acts to cool the cutters and wet the debris.
