The invention relates to a method for preparing functionalized polyphenylene ethers by grafting of low-molecular compounds containing functional groups. According to the invention polyphenylene ethers with a mean molar mass of between 10,000 and 80,000 are graft-modified alone or in the form of their blends and/or graft copolymers from polyphenylene ethers and vinyl aromatic polymers by means of low-molecular compounds containing at least one carboxyl and/or acid anhydride and/or amide and/or imide and/or hydroxyl and/or epoxy and/or amine and/or silane group under solid-state reaction conditions and at temperatures between 60 and 250 DEG C. The method provided for by the invention permits a significant reduction in the cross-linking and degradation of the polymer substrate while simultaneously increasing the degree of PPE functionalization.
