The transverse bars (20) may be adapted to carry trunks or suitcases. The transverse bars have a profiled cross-section, which permits the U-shaped jaws (40,41) to be moved toward or away from the centerline of the vehicle. Circular suction feet (30) are attached to the end of each bar, and have suction lines so that they may be evacuated and pressed into contact with the vehicle roof by air pressure.
