PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for starting an engine speedily from an idle stop state while exhibiting excellent durability of a starter and silentness during running. SOLUTION: This engine starting method is one for starting the engine from an idle stop state whereby a preliminary process is carried out in the idle stop state, starting process is carried out after receiving an engine starting signal, and a returning process is carried out after engine starts. In the preliminary process, a pinion 12 is pulled up by a magnet switch 2 in order that the pinion 12 is brought into contact with a ring gear R. In the starting process, the pinion 12 is drivingly rotated by a motor 11 to be engaged with the ring gear R, and then the engine is started. Therefore, the pinion 12 is engaged with the ring gear R rapidly and the engine is started speedily. In the returning process, the pinion 12 is returned to an original position apart from the ring gear R and thereby engaging noise is not caused during running. |
