PURPOSE: Provided is a method for removing trimethylpentanediol, which cannot be isolated so far from final neopentylglycol(NPG), and for isolating high purity NPG without saponification necessary to remove neopentylglycol isophthalate(IBNP) or hydroxypivalic hydroxypivalate(HPNE) during NPG purification process. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of (i) addition reacting isobutyl aldehyde and formaldehyde in the presence of t-amine as a catalyst of aldol condensation reaction, so as to form hydroxypivaldehyde(HPA) which is an aldol condensate, (ii) extracting the condensate into organic phase by using C4-C10, higher alcohol, (iii) hydrogenating the organic phase in the presence of Raney-nickel catalyst, and (iv) adding water to the product of the step(iii), extracting NPG into aqueous phase, and then distilling and purifying the NPG.
