PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop an ortho-substituted benzaldehyde useful as a starting substance capable of being used for synthesizing agrochemicals, electronic materials and medicines. SOLUTION: This compound of formula (I) (X1 is H or F; X2 is H or F; Y is Cl, Br or I) was synthesized by reacting a halogenated benzene of formula (II) with an organic lithium compound in a solvent or mixed solvent at a temperature of -60 deg.C and further then with a formyl homologue of formula (III).
