PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose new facsimile control procedures that can realize high- speed facsimile communication in compliance with the ITU-T V.34 recommendations. SOLUTION: The modem 2 of this invention is provided with a controller function 21 that applies further control to a data pump function controlled by a FAX software program 11 or processes communication data, the data pump function 22 that directly communicates the communicates the communication data with a FAX unit 3 being a communication opposite party, a means that confirms whether or not communication is made with an opposite device by a procedure in compliance with the high speed communication procedure, a memory that makes communication in a control channel mode, and a means that sends/receives an original with connection in a primary channel mode.
