The present invention provides a method and apparatus for updating options on a wireless device (201). An update signal is transmitted within an update zone (207), which corresponds to a geographic area. Upon receiving the update signal, a wireless device (201) updates options in the wireless device. This updating can be to change the ring control from ringing to vibrating, to increase the volume of the ringing, or to disable either the wireless device or the transmitted on the wireless device.
