PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for inspecting a magnetic recorder capable of recognizing a recording width of recording track for a short time, and recognizing relative height of head magnetically. SOLUTION: Tracks Ach and Bch are recorded on a magnetic tape with a recording head WA by using the timing tracking technique adopted in a DDS. The calibration operation of the recording head WA is performed to determine a tracking timer value Ta, then the recording widths of recording tracks Twa and Twb and the relative height of the head are determined by calculation from the determined tracking timer value Ta.
