PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new water-soluble intercalator and a water-soluble fluorescent intercalator which can be used especially effectively when a complementary double-stranded nucleic acid fragment or a partially complementary double- stranded nucleic acid fragment is detected and to provide a detection method for a nucleic acid fragment. SOLUTION: The water-soluble fluorescent intercalator which is expressed by the following formula is used: F-La-X [where F represents a fluorescent group, X represents a cyclic group, and La represents a linkage group. At least any of X and La can give water solubility to the intercalator, or it has a part which can be transformed into a group which can give water solubility]. It is preferable that a substituent expressed by-Lb-Z is bonded to X [where Z represents a nonfluorescent group, and Lb represents a linkage group.].
