PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the dispersion compensation method of a wavelength division multiplex(WDM) light signal. SOLUTION: The dispersion compensation method, including a step for receiving a light signal having several channels separated by a wavelength and a step for applying dispersion compensation, irrespective of a wavelength outside a wavelength band with respect to at least one prescribed wavelength band is supplied. The wavelength band straddles a plurality of channels less than the total number of channels in a signal. Dispersion compensation can be applied to a channel group in the wavelength band, by using an optimized dispersion compensation element to the specified wavelength band on dispersion compensation and attenuation. Two or above wavelength bands can be selected so that they integrally straddles a WDM signal. Consequently, the dispersion compensation characteristics of the several dispersion compensation elements are constituted, even if the individual channels are not individually processed and the advantageous dispersion compensation characteristics can be generated for the entire band width of the WDM signal. An intermediate span single device realizes 40 channels at the transmission distance of at least 6,000 km and at the data transfer speed of 10 gigabits/second for two bands. Thus, a simple constitution makes high speed operation possible. |
