PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a distance measuring apparatus and a distance measuring method which can detect easily and quickly a distance from an object with high precision. SOLUTION: On the basis of two images obtained with two CCD cameras 12, 14 arranged and separated from a reference plane A by a prescribed distance, an object recognizing part 28 recognizes whether an object M exists on the plane A. A region setting part 30 sets a distance measuring region containing the same part of the recognized object M on each of the images. A distance measuring part 32 performs distance measurement only for the distance measuring region set by the region setting part 30, and obtains the distance from the object M.
