PURPOSE: A polyorganosiloxane catalyst and a method of bisphenol A using the catalyst are provided, to reduce the deterioration of catalytic activity of the catalyst by controlling the active site amount of a sulfonyl group-containing hydrocarbon group and a mercapto group-containing hydrocarbon group. CONSTITUTION: The polyorganosiloxane catalyst comprises a sulfonyl group-containing hydrocarbon group and a mercapto group-containing hydrocarbon group, wherein the total amount of the sulfonyl group-containing hydrocarbon group and the mercapto group-containing hydrocarbon group is 0.3-2.0 micromol per 1 m¬2 of the catalyst. Preferably the mercapto group-containing hydrocarbon group is mercaptomethyl or mercaptopropyl group. The polyorganosiloxane catalyst has a specific area of 500-1,500 m2/g. Preferably the polyorganosiloxane catalyst is supported on a porous material, and the porous material is silica gel or silica-alumina. Bisphenol A is prepared by dehydration-condensation of acetone and phenol in the presence of the polyorganosiloxane catalyst.
