PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head mounted type video display device in which the illumination luminance of a surface emitting illumination means is kept almost constant at all times even when a power supply voltage fluctuates without performing a troublesome adjusting operation. SOLUTION: This device is provided with video display means 17R and 17L, the surface emitting illumination means 23R and 23L for illuminating the video display means with white illumination light, first optical systems 13R and 13L for leading video images displayed on the video display means to the eyeballs of a user so as to be observed, second optical systems 41R and 41L arranged between the video display means and the first optical systems and provided with a polarization control element and a double refraction plate for optically increasing the apparent pixel number of the video display means, a power supply voltage detection means 61, a control data storage means 75 for storing the control data of the surface emitting illumination means corresponding to the power supply voltage and control means (65, 72L, 72R and 76) for controlling the drive of the surface emitting illumination means on the basis of the control data corresponding to the power supply voltage detected by the power supply voltage detection means and stored in the control data storage means.
