PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize not only the prevention of the damage of the surface of a fixing member caused when a separating member abuts on the fixing member but also excellent paper passing ability in the fixing device. SOLUTION: This fixing device 40 is equipped with the separating members 56 and 57 which are arranged on a downstream side in the carrying direction of a recording medium 35 from a contact part 48 between a pair of separating members 41A and 41B and whose tips are opposed by leaving space in between with respect to the members 41A and 41B, an image mode detecting device 23 detecting an image mode, and a separating condition adjusting device 70 adjusting the positions of the members 56 and 57 to the contact part 48 in accordance with the image mode detected by an image mode detecting device 23. The device 70 can adjust the positions of the members 55 and 57 to the contact part 48 based on image density, the outside diameter of a roller, the kind of the recording medium, and the carrying speed or the humidity of the recording medium.
