In electrochemical disinfection of water in a cell of 2 electrically-contacted edge electrode plates and bipolar electrode plate(s), divided by separator membranes, the water, in 2 sub-streams, flows parallel to the anode and cathode segments of the array of electrode plates, spacers and separator membranes in a plastics housing. The electrodes are 0.5-5 mm apart. Electrolysis is carried out at 5-500 mA/cm<2>. The treated sub-streams are recombined. An Independent claim is also included for the electrolysis cell used in this process.
