PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous copolymer composition, especially a self- stabilized aqueous copolymer emulsion. SOLUTION: The emulsion contains (a) an aqueous carrier and (b) a polymer mixture, wherein (b) the polymer mixture contains (1) 40-99.5 wt.% of a copolymer with a weight average molecular weight of at least 3,000 and (2) 0.5-60 wt.% of a stabilizing copolymer, wherein the stabilizing copolymer is selected from the group consisting of (i) polymers of 5-95 wt.% of a hydrophilic macromonomer having at least 10 wt.% of an acid-functional monomer and 5-95 wt.% of at least one hydrophobic monomer and (ii) polymers of 5-95 wt.% of a hydrophobic macromonomer and 5-95 wt.% of a hydrophilic copolymer containing at least 10 wt.% of an acid-functional monomer.
