SUBSTANCE: invention relates to novel strains of gram-negative bacterial strain UFZ B 378, UFZ B 406 and UFZ B 404 that are able to reduce sulfate and growing under anaerobic conditions and to method of bacterial disinfection of sewage waters by reduction of sulfate to sulfide. Strains use methanol as a source of carbon and energy and convert sulfate to sulfide being without dependence on other sources of carbon and energy. Method involves the use of the above indicated strains for reduction of sulfate to sulfide at 3-45 C, pH value from 3.9 to 9.5 under anaerobic conditions. Method can be used for decontamination of anaerobic, sulfate, metal-containing waters and waters polluted with radioactive substances, in part, for decontamination of mine waters and waters flooding the closed uranium mines and units for water washing out for soil treatment.
