PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for a permanent magnet motor serving as a starter of an engine and a power generator requiring only a small loading space in a vehicle and dispensing with a large-scale starter relay. SOLUTION: A brushless motor 9 is driven through an inverter circuit 12 by connecting a shaft of a brushless motor (permanent magnet motor) 9 with an output shaft of the engine and setting a chopper circuit 24 in a non-operation state or by operating it as a booster chopper, when operating the motor 9 as the starter of the engine. When the brushless motor 9 is operated as the power generator, if a power generation voltage of the brushless motor 9 is higher than a voltage of a battery 10, the inverter circuit 12 is set in the non- operation state, and the chopper circuit 24 is operated as a pressure reducing chopper to charge the battery 10. If a power generation voltage of the brushless motor 9 is lower tan a voltage of the battery 10, a transistor 14U or 14W on a negative side of the inverter circuit 12 is turned on and off while a transistor 25 of the chopper circuit 24 is turned on to operate the inverter circuit 12 as the booster chopper so as to charge the battery 10. |
