Combustion heats water in the inner vessel (3) to a higher temperature. Before carrying out the next calorific value measurement in a series, and whilst at the higher temperature, at least some of the water in the inner vessel, is transferred into the outer vessel (5). In this way, at least some of the heat of combustion is employed to raise the temperature of the water jacket in the outer vessel. The inner vessel is then filled or topped up and the temperature difference is adjusted. An Independent claim is included for corresponding apparatus.
