An ultra-violet light unit comprises a source, e.g. a tube 10, of ultra-violet light located in a casing 2 having an opening 8 for the light rays in a portion of one end wall which slopes back under the top wall of the casing. The unit is designed to stand on feet 18 on a bank counter and is used to illuminate a normally invisible signature recorded in a savings book, unbeknown to the holder, in zinc sulphide or similar material. Comparison of this signature with a normal visible signature enables stolen books to be detected. |
