Methyl isobutyl ketone and methyl isobutyl carbinol, and mixtures thereof, are prepared by contacting crude mesityl oxide with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (0.3 to 1 ml. of 8% concentration per litre of mesityl oxide) and caustic alkali, preferably by contacting with caustic soda at a concentration of 0.3 to 1 ml. of 10% per litre of mesityl oxide, for at least 10 seconds at temperatures between 5 DEG and 50 DEG C., and then hydrogenating the product in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The hydrogenation is preferably effected using Ranay nickel at temperatures between 80 DEG and 130 DEG C. and at pressures between 10 and 13 atmos., or at higher temperatures and pressures if a preponderance of the carbinol is required in the final product.
|
