The backrest has a base part (1) and a pivoted top part (2), with an adjusting drive (3) on either side, connected by a shaft (2b) and driven by an electric motor. Each drive has stationary toothed segments (3a), with first toothed counter segments (3b) rolling off these. The counter segments are pivoted about a common axis (2d). One of the first counter segments is connected non-turnable to a coaxial second toothed counter segment (4b). A pinion (4a) driven by electric motor engages into the coaxial segment. The pinion is located on the take-off shaft of a motor/transmission unit.
