PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for increasing the efficiency of a high level cache in plural level memory hierarchies. SOLUTION: Relevant information is held for various data values stored in a low level cache, and when the various data values stored in the low level cache are lost, whether or not the data values can be generated from corresponding data stored in the low level cache is indicated. When one of the various data values stored in the low level cache is updated, whether or not the corresponding data should be stored in a high level cache is decided at least partially based on the state of the relevant information corresponding to one of the various data values stored in the low level cache to be updated, and whether or not an update value to be written in the low level cache is made coincident with one or plural selection data value patterns.
