Bending load is applied to a mast (2) by a power unit (3). A light receiver (24) mounted on mast, receives light from a stationary light source (23) through a screen (26). Deflection of mast is detected from a charge coupled device (CCD) camera of light receiver, for detecting bending strength of mast.
