A method of culturing pancreatic endocrine cells having been isolated and dispersed from an animal pancreas, characterized by culturing by the monolayer culture method pancreatic endocrine cells having been isolated and dispersed in the presence of nicotinamide, then stripping exclusively the pancreatic endocrine cells to thereby eliminate fibroblasts, and dispersing and culturing the cells in an extracellular matrix in the presence of nicotinamide; a device for an artificial pancreatic islet containing the above cells in the extracellular matrix; and an artificial pancreatic islet of the diffusion chamber type having the above device in a container which is isolated by a polymer film having a selective permeability.
