PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for inputting character codes in a telephone is provided to easily find out the location of a question mark and to input the question mark with a simple operation. CONSTITUTION: When a question mark is allocated to a key identical to vowels, the question mark should be arranged so as to be separated from vowels forming a diphthong. In other words, in case that the question mark is allocated to a button together with the vowels except vowels in button 7,8,and 0, the input of the question mark can be very simplified. For example, when the question mark is allocated to the vowels in button 9 and the button 9 is pushed to input the question mark after a letter ending without a final consonant, it results in the input of question mark, not the vowels in button 9, because the vowels in button 9 cannot be combined after other vowels.
