PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detector which facilitates formation of a gray scale and is high in detection accuracy of a moving member and a keyboard instrument using the same. SOLUTION: The gray scale is formed, in such a manner that the number per unit area of the dots having light shieldability or reflectivity along the direction of movement (X-direction) of the moving object change in prescribed change characteristics. The position detector outputs the photodetecting signals, corresponding to the positions of the moving member, when the gray scale fixed to the moving member is irradiated with detecting light a photointerruptor and receives the transmitted light thereof.
