In a combined engine starter and auxiliariesdrive system in which a normal output shaft 2 is connected to the engine 8 and a second higherspeed output shaft 3 is connected through an overrunning clutch 10 to the accessories 9, a second over-running clutch 11 is interposed between the engine and the accessories. A starter turbine 1 drives output shaft 2, 3 through a low-ratio gear drive 5 and a low ratio gear drive 6 and has a speed governor 12 connected to its shaft 4. A clutch 7 is disengaged to allow the starter turbine to drive the accessories when the engine is stopped or at low speed whilst clutch 11 over-runs. When the speed transmitted from the engine to the accessories is greater than that transmitted by shaft 3, clutch 11 is engaged and clutch 10 over-runs. In a modification the engine is driven through a three-element differential gear drive, the third element of which is coupled to a turbo-compressor supplying combustion air for the turbine 1, the drive of the second output shaft being connected to the element of the differential gear which is coupled to the engine drive. |
